Meet Raj, Founder and Coach of Guitartricity

What I bring you

I started playing guitar in 1985 in the UK, inspired by players like Alex Lifeson, Edward Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Mark Knopfler, and Gary Moore. At university, I regularly played at a blues, rock, and funk‑fusion night in my college town of Leicester, opening myself to a wide range of styles.

I later spent 15 years in California, performing at venues including the House of Blues (Las Vegas), The Key Club (Hollywood), and The Coach House (San Juan Capistrano). During that time, I gigged with multiple bands, ran a solo project, and opened or headlined alongside national acts such as Molly Hatchet and Berlin.

Studying at Musicians Institute (GIT) in Hollywood in 2005 was a major turning point. Even after decades of playing, MI — and teachers like Scott Henderson, Carl Verheyen, Keith Wyatt, and Ken Steiger — gave me the big‑picture framework: how scales, arpeggios, chords, and ideas connect into a balanced system that drives real progress. It also taught me the foundations of proper performance — how to prepare, deliver, and play with intention on stage and in the studio.

Earlier in my career, I competed in Guitar Center’s  Guitarmageddon competition when it first launched, performing in front of Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Steve Lukather, and Steve Stevens in advanced rounds. After the competition was rebranded as King of the Blues, I was invited to judge at the local level alongside Phil Collen (Def Leppard) at the El Toro Guitar Center in Orange County. I later re‑entered the competition and advanced from thousands of contestants to the US Top 25 in 2010 — a performance featured in the Orange County Register. Around the same time, my piece Road to Nashville was nominated for Best Instrumental at the Orange County Music Awards at The Grove of Anaheim.

In 2009, I performed at the LA Amp & Custom Guitar Show — an event covered by Premier Guitar and Vintage Guitar Magazine, and attended by top builders and industry professionals including Reinhold Bogner, Dave Friedman, Pierangelo Mezzabarba, Brian Wampler, and others.

Guitar performance, instruction, and gear have been at the centre of my life for decades — and Guitartricity is where all of that experience comes together.

I coach with a modern, holistic approach inspired by the kind of professional sessions you’ll find in LA — where tone, technique, expression, and gear all work together. It’s a way of learning that looks at the whole picture: how you play, how you sound, and how those elements connect to the music you want to make.

Every session is shaped around you — your pace, your goals, your sound, and the musician you’re becoming. We dig into the mechanics of playing, but we also explore the expressive side: touch, feel, articulation, and the gear choices that help you find your unique sound.

Whether you’re strengthening foundations, refining technique, or expanding your fretboard knowledge, repertoire and more, we’ll work in a way that’s fun, focused, and hard‑wired for real progress. Click below to book a session!
